Summer Fun or Work?

Today was a hot summer day!  We ran some errands, went to the farmer's market, went to a church fellowship and then headed home.  I walked in the door and my boys immediately asked if they could swim.  I was a "mean parent" and said "No, you have to take a nap now and it's the hottest part of the day..."  So they took their nap while I cleaned the kitchen and then woke up and swam.  I debated if I should join in the pool fun or bake bread like I had planned and organize homeschool stuff for next year.  I decided to keep the 1 year old inside with me while I baked and organized and let Daddy swim with the other two boys.  Finally I got to a stopping point and decided to go have some summer fun with my boys!  I only lasted an hour in that heat but it was fun.  After supper I finished up baking and cleaning out old homeschool bins and material.  Here is the point to this blog:  even though it is summer time don't stop everything to play the whole time...but don't miss out on the fun because you don't stop working

Your goal should be to balance work and fun this summer.  Break up your chores and cooking by going out to play with your kids.  Take them to the park and library.  Take them to the root beer stand and eat at the drive thru (even though it's unhealthy!)  Go ride bikes.  Play in the pool or sprinkler or slip and slide.  Host a party or a bible study with all of your friends and your kids friends.  Have a firepit and cook over it.  Go camping, rafting, tubing, hiking, climbing.

But don't forget, you still need to plan your meals and cook for your family, wash clothes, clean and change diapers:)

Ask God for wisdom in managing and balancing your time this summer!

Insecurity and Significance

The older I have gotten (I'm only 28 though!) the more I struggle with insecurity.  I don't know if its because I've had three babies and quit exercising as much or if its because I don't remind myself of God's Word on the matter like I used to.  When I was a teenage girl I kept notes in my Bible and in my room that had verses on the topic of insecurity and self image.  I constantly reminded myself of who I was in Christ.  I had a quote in my Bible that said,

"I am significant because Christ lives in me and I am secure because I am in Christ"
Think about that for a minute...You don't have to feel insecure, invisible, less than or like a nobody because if you are born again then the King of ALL Kings lives INSIDE of you and that makes you somebody!!  That makes you a child of the King, a saint, an heir, a son and daughter of God!

Colossians 1:27 says, "To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the gentiles; which is CHRIST IN YOU the hope of glory."

I can be secure because I am in Christ...He is my Rock, my fortress, my shield, my protecter.

Ephesians 2:6 says, "and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus"

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "If any man be in Christ He is a new creature.."

Be confident in who you are in Christ!  Be thankful that Christ lives in you ans share it with the world!

James 5

We are now on the last chapter of James!  Congratulations!  Take some time to get alone with the Lord and pray.  Thank God for what He has done for you and for who He is.  Ask for wisdom.  Pray for the church prayer list, our church family and the Pastor and his family.

1.       Read James 5:1-3.  Here James is talking about the rich heaping up treasures for the last days.  You may be rich, but most of us are not.  The rich are apt to troubles because of their riches.  They have to worry about where their money will be safe and secure at.  The investments, the banks, the stocks, the government…all things they have to worry about.  I like it better having barely any money so I don’t have to worry about losing it!  God provides enough for what I need.
2.      What does James 5:2 say about their riches?  A lot of “rich” people have obtained their riches through corruption, greed and scandal and that is wrong.
3.      A commentator said that true value is only found in spiritual things, not in physical earthly things.  Earthly and monetary value always changes.  Prices of houses go up and down, etc.  Contentment is only found in spiritual value.  Those who only depend on riches will be disappointed in the last days when riches profit nothing and Jesus is all that matters!  The commentator says, “Weep and howl," James said, "for the misery that is coming upon them," cause you've tried to set yourselves up for these last days, you've tried to hedge against inflation by getting into gold, by getting into silver but now they're worthless.”
4.    Read James 5:4-6.  “So the Lord or James speaks out against the oppression of the poor or the oppression of the laborer by management, cries for inequity.”  Verse five speaks of those who lived in pleasure and lust.
5.    Here are the lessons I take from these verses:
Do not trust in your riches, but trust in the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6.
Do not oppress the poor.
Do not only live for pleasure only.
Do not heap together treasure for the last days.
Do be wise with your money, give, and help others.
Be content with what the Lord has provided for you.

Are You Overwhelmed?

Sometimes life can get overwhelming.  Paying bills, working, taking care of your family, church, activities, sports, problems, cooking and cleaning, never ending laundry, people always needing you and calling your name...what overwhelms you?  God knew we would get overwhelmed.  When life seems out of control what are you tempted to do?  You could be tempted to yell, cry, drink, smoke, cuss, etc.  But God wants you to cast your cares on Him.  "Casting all your care on Him because He cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7  Call out to Him in prayer when you are overwhelmed.

      As a Pastor's wife I get overwhelmed a lot.
As a mother of three kids who homeschools I get overwhelmed!
As an obsessive compulsive neat freak I get overwhelmed:)
As a woman with hormones I get overwhelmed...

This is the verse that I read today when I was overwhelmed...

"Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.  From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.  I will abide in thy tabernacle forever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings."

Like the song says, "God is bigger than any mountain, bigger than anything."  God is higher than our circumstances and He can handle them when we cannot.  Praise His Name!  Go to God, He can help you:)

Is the Lord Willing?

We are still in the book of James!  I love the book of James!  We have taken some breaks so you may want to skim back over James chapters 1 through chapter 4:12 to refresh your memory.  Remind yourself of some things you have learned since we began this study.  Hold yourself accountable to the standard in God’s Word.  Whenever we compare ourselves to other Christians we can always find some that are doing a better job or a worse job than we are.  This is why it is imperative that we use the Bible as our barometer.
1.      Read James 4:13 and compare it to Proverbs 27:1.  We should not brag to others about what our future plans are because they could always change.  The Lord is in control of everything and we should say “I will do this if the Lord’s willing.”

2.      Read James 4:14.  What is your life, according to this verse?  Define the word vapor.  How does the end of verse 14 describe a vapor?  Read Job 7:7.  How does it describe life?  Has your life gone by fast so far?  We do not know what tomorrow will bring and life is short.  I heard a saying that said, “Life is short, pray hard.”  Life IS short so we should pray hard, love hard, and live it to the fullest in obedience to Christ.  If you knew you were going to die tomorrow what would you do different today?  We should think soberly more often.

3.      Read James 4:15.  This verse is why people say, “Lord willing…if the Lord is willing…”  Read Acts 18:21 for an example of this.

4.      Read James 4:16.  What kind of rejoicing is evil?  Have you ever boasted in yourself before?  Usually if I do this the Lord immediately humbles me in that area!

5.      Read James 4:17.  What is sin according to this verse?  This is a hard and convicting saying!  We are all probably guilty of this one at some point!  There is one time in particular that sticks out in my mind.  One dark night John and I walked out of a Christian bookstore together headed to our van.  I saw a Hispanic boy about 10 years old standing outside alone.  I knew I was supposed to go share the gospel with him but I didn’t.  We left and I have always regretted not sharing the gospel with that boy.  I pray that someone else was bold enough to win him to the Lord.  When this really upsets me all I can do is take it to God in prayer.  Read Luke 12:47 and John 9:41.  Therefore, do good when you know to so you will not regret it…

Why do you do the things you do?

My husband and I have been talking a lot lately about why we do the things we do.  Have you ever thought about it?  A lot of times we do the things we do because we were raised that way or we were made to do things without knowing the reason behind it.  Why do you dress the way you dress?  Why do you wear a thing called a bathing suit to the beach?  Why do you wear certain clothes to church and different clothes to school or work?  Why do you go to college?  Why are you working at that  job?  What are your motives behind doing things for others and/or the Lord?  Do you find yourself doing things that your heart is not in just because people expect you to do them?  We are only supposed to please one person and that is the Lord!  The next time you are about to do something out of habit, tradition or ritual check your motives...seek the Lord and His Word for the answers...
